Anesthetic Awareness

Anesthetic awareness is a situation that can occur during surgery in which the patient wakes up and becomes aware of the surgical proceedings. The patient can feel pressure or pain during the procedure, and in some cases may suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder following an awareness experience. While severe cases of anesthetic awareness are not common, research is ongoing to determine the causes of awareness and ways to prevent it from happening.
